A beginner's guide for doing triathlons in Tokyo

It is great that you are interested in doing triathlon. It is a fun sport to do as you get to mix up your training with some swimming, biking and running. The sport is booming here in Japan due to the 2020 Olympics, and a great many Expats are into it. Another great thing is that all levels are welcome and encouraged, from beginners to advanced. Ladies are especially encouraged to get in to the sport and there is a big push happening right now by the JTU (Japan Triathlon Union) and Race Directors to have more women racing.

How to start off?

There is an investment needed in getting the gear. But you don't need to spend a lot of money on expensive wetsuits, bikes and running shoes etc. at first. Best to start off at entry level and you can always upgrade down the track if you like the sport and want to progress.

Swimming

Swimming is the most technical leg of the sport. Joining a squad is recommended as coaching will help you with technique to get you to swim efficiently with less effort. And joining a squad helps to "push" yourself more by swimming with others. It is ideal to swim at least 3 times a week. (once per week with a squad and twice on your own). I can refer you to a good local swim squad.

There are pools around located around Tokyo. All of the Ward Offices run local pools and there are many in central Tokyo. Here is a list of the most popular public pools.

Wetsuits are compulsory at all races in Japan. It's faster and safer to swim in a wetsuit as you get more buoyancy in the water. And of course they are warmer for early and late season races. You can buy one online from overseas from a shop like Wiggle if you can work out your size. Or from stores in Tokyo such as Athlonia or Art Sports. Just go with an entry level one to start off with. Or if you can stretch your budget, then buy a mid-level one if you can afford it as it will have better features.

My next post will cover cycling. Stay tuned!
